The Guardian Documentaries

The Guardian's documentary film series fit awkwardly with the rest of the Guardian's content, and was not being recognised by readers despite it's high quality.

The new design established the series in readers' minds, and offers an easy way to promote new film to engaged readers.

A Guardian documentary was nominated for an Oscar in 2019.

Strategy: promoting new launches

Our research found that users were confused about the documentary film series. Without already knowing about Guardian documentaries, it's easy to assume documentaries refers to reviews of other documentaries, or perhaps news clips.

We created a documentaries newsletter, that was promoted by showing a trailer of the closest upcoming release at all times — with the newsletter being a notification when it's out. Using this strategy we bypass confusion about the documentaries, harness the audience of the series, and built a powerful tool used to this day to promote all new releases.
